Control of Substances Harmful to Health

Every year, thousands of workers are made ill by hazardous substances, contracting lung diseases, asthma, cancer and skin disease such as dermatitis. These diseases cost many millions of pounds each year to:

industry, to replace the trained worker
society, in disability allowances and medicines
individuals, who are off work ill and may lose their jobs.

The Control of Substances harmful to health - was introduced by HSE regulations in 2002 and amended in 2013. Companies need to undertake COSHH assessments as part of their regular risk assessment process and are responsible for taking effective measures to control exposure and protect health. This may also improve production and/or cut waste.
